Maciej Malawski


Holds a PhD in computer science and an MSc in computer science and in physics. In 2011-2012 he was a postdoc at the University of Notre Dame, USA. Currently an associate professor at the Department of Computer Science AGH and a senior researcher at ACC Cyfronet AGH. His scientific interests include parallel and distributed computing, large-scale data analysis, cloud technologies, resource management and scientific applications. He spends his free time on outdoor activities in the mountains near Kraków and around the world.

Marian Bubak

Scientific Affairs Director

He obtained M.Sc. in Technical Physics and Ph.D. in Computer Science from the AGH University of Science and Technology, Krakow, Poland. He also leads the Laboratory of Information Methods in Medicine at ACC Cyfronet AGH, is a staff member of the Department of Computer Science AGH, and the Professor of Distributed System Engineering (emeritus) at the Informatics Institute University of Amsterdam. His research interests include parallel and distributed computing and quantum computing. He served key roles in about 15 EU-funded projects and authored about 230 papers. He is a member of editorial boards of FGCS, Bio-Algorithms and Med-Systems, and Computer Science Journal.

Marco Viceconti

Marco Viceconti is a specialist of in silico medicine. Founder, first Director and Past President of the VPH Institute, he also initiated the Avicenna Alliance, where he serves as member of the Board of Directors. He founded and directed for seven years the Insigneo Institute, the largest research institute on in silico medicine in Europe. Prof Viceconti is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and a member of the World Council of Biomechanics.

Peter M.A. Sloot

Research: I try to understand how natural and man-made systems processes information. I study this ‘natural information processing’ in complex systems by computational modeling and simulation as well as through formal methods. My work is applied to a large variety of disciplines. Recent work has been on the virology and epidemiology of infectious diseases, notably HIV, through Complex Networks. Award: Leading Scientist Award (3.6 M€) (St. Petersburg, Russian Federation, 2010), largest individual scientific award in the world.

Zbigniew Nawrat

Scientist, inventor, teacher, visionary. Pioneer of artificial organs (artificial heart POLVAD, POLTAH), medical robotics (Robin Heart surgical robot) and methods for optimizing surgical operations by modeling, simulation and virtual reality technology. In 1997-2000 he managed the first simulation project for cardiac surgery. He is the author of the idea and initiator of the ORGANEOM project – human research as a system of interaction between a biological organism and artificial organs. He is responsible in Poland for the European project DIH HERO Robotics in Healthcare.

Stefan Zachow

Dr. Zachow is an expert in medical image analysis and geometry processing, medical image segmentation, model-based therapy planning. His domain is mainly computer-assisted surgery planning with a focus on cranio-maxillofacial surgery as well as orthopaedic surgery. Rod Hose

Professor of Computational Biomechanics, University of Sheffield, UK

His research interests are in the development of methods and workflows for the computational analysis of (primarily) cardiovascular systems, and in their translation to clinical application. He was one of the co-authors of the White Paper that launched the European Commission’s Virtual Physiological Human initiative. Most recently he was Scientific Co-ordinator for the Horizon 2020 project EurValve.

Dieter Kranzlmüller

Full professor and Deputy Director of the Institute of Computer Science at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre

His scientific focus lies in e-infrastructures, including network and IT management, grid and cloud computing, as well as in high performance computing, virtual reality and visualisation. He has been acting as a reviewer and international expert for several countries and research programmes, and has co-authored more than 300 scientific papers.

Claire Chalopin

Senior researcher, data based imaging in medicine at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Göttingen, DE

She is the leader of the Intraoperative Multimodal Imaging group. Her research areas focus on the clinical evaluation of new imaging methods for the surgery, the development of approaches using Artificial Intelligence to support the interpretation of the non-standard image data and the further technical development of imaging devices. She cooperates with international research teams.

Jacek Kitowski

Ewa Deelman

Her group explores the interplay between automation and the management of scientific workflows that include resource provisioning and data management. Deelman pioneered workflow planning for computations executing in distributed environments. Ewa Deelman’s group has lead the design and development of the Pegasus Workflow Management software and conducts research in job scheduling and resource provisioning in distributed systems, workflow performance modeling, provenance capture, and the use of cloud platforms for science.

Irena Roterman-Konieczna

Tanja Bratan

Coordinator of the "Innovations in the Healthcare System" Business Unit in the "Emerging Technologies" Competence Center at Fraunhofer ISI

Has a background in e-health and more than 15 years of professional experience in healthcare innovation research in Germany and the UK. This includes various large-scale evaluations, technology assessment projects and collaborations with medtech researchers and companies focusing, among others, on rare diseases, assistive technologies and artificial intelligence in healthcare. In her free time she enjoys various outdoor activities, vegan cooking and making and repairing things.

Andrew Narracott

Senior Lecturer in Cardiovascular Mechanics in the Department of Infection, Immunity and Cardiovascular Disease and Director of Operations for Insigneo at the University of Sheffield

Andrew has 20 years’ experience in EC and international research projects, including a six-month research fellowship at the RIKEN Institute in Tokyo, Japan. He is Sheffield’s Principal Investigator for the Sano project, coordinating the contribution of Insigneo in facilitating Sano to develop and translate innovative solutions for computational medicine. Andrew’s work is strongly focused on identifying and progressing the fundamental and readily-translatable elements of computational physiology, to advance clinical practice.

Agnieszka Szymańska

Agnieszka is a graduate (M. Sc.) of the Cracow University of Economics. At ACC Cyfronet AGH she is responsible in particular for administrative and organisational affairs, human resources, formal and legal matters, as well as public procurement. In her free time she practices sports – horse riding, volleyball, cycling and skiing.

Karol Krawentek
