The European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) initiative was launched in 2019 to offer a virtual environment for open access to services for storing, sharing, processing and reusing research data and other digital objects. The EOSC requires a holistic approach covering the federation of research Infrastructures and e-Infrastructures, the interoperability of services, and the fulfilment of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) principles, the setup of a consolidated access interface and the definition of a governance model and rules for participation. By discussing the EOSC governance, the EOSC architecture and the main activities, we can understand its potential impact on scientific data research activities.
The EOSC initiative gathers assets from the scientific and technical community to build successful and efficient data preservation and analysis frameworks. For example, the PRIMAGE and CHAIMELEON H2020 projects, devoted to developing digital repositories of medical imaging data from cancer, make use of technical services from the EOSC catalogue to build up their back-end platforms. We will discuss the architecture and integration of such services for managing federated data access and processing.
