The Sano Centre for Computational Medicine is a new International Scientific Foundation located in Kraków, Poland. Sano aspires to be a major translational scientific institute, operating at the meeting point of academic science, established MedTech industry, and emerging start-up environment, combining the best of these three perspectives. Established with support from the European Commission and the Foundation for Polish Science, Sano aims to be a major driving force behind the advancement of computational medicine for the benefit of healthcare systems worldwide.

Sano will act as a core technology and expertise provider for industry, and creator of innovation, developing state-of-the-art solutions for healthcare. Thanks to the substantial funding and excellent European partnership network, Sano will bring a critical mass to this transformational field of research, in order to translate scientific advancements onto clinical practice. Sano’s ambition is to become the Reference Centre for Computational Medicine in Central Europe and build a reputation as a leading center on a global level. 

As a cross-disciplinary institution, Sano will use machine learning/artificial intelligence (ML/AI), large scale computer simulations, data science, and other computational technologies towards overcoming global challenges in healthcare systems. The research agenda will be executed in close collaboration with Partners in Poland, EU and USA.

We’re looking for an established specialist in business development with experience in medical technologies, to join our expanding team at Sano. Senior Business Developer will be heavily involved in activities related to acquisition of new alliances and collaborations in industry, clinics and academia, and will devote considerable portion of the employment time for commercialisation activities. The successful candidate will work with Sano researchers and other employees to ensure further expansion and development of the Centre.

Your key responsibilities:

  • Matchmaking: Identifying and uniting industrial partners and their goals with new ideas and opportunities within Sano and from external Sano collaborators. Assembling successful consortia, in which Sano plays the key role of enabler and development specialist.
  • Needs-Discovery: Identifying missing keystones within inside industrial partners, the essential elements that can be addressed by Sano, through the development and provision of one or more specialised services (teaching, contract research, industrial PhDs, common grant applications…).
  • Identification: Finding clinical and academic research collaborators for Sano, typically by attending conferences, workshops, searching Internet, responding to communication sent to Sano.
  • Facilitation: Taking part in meetings with such potential collaborators to establish a more precise understanding of the opportunity at hand: stage (idea, data, software, tested/untested, etc.), interests, expectations, IP entanglement.
  • Case-Building: Establishing, typically thorough detailed market estimation, the adequacy of the case supporting proposed technological innovations (clinical decision support, diagnostics, devices, etc.). This will require the joint development with Sano’s scientists of descriptions of the innovations they are creating. Assisting in identification of potential and weaknesses.
  • Data: Coordinating various activity strands related to acquisition of new medical data. Typically acting as the person of earliest contact with clinics that have interesting data sets, to fuel Sano’s technological developments.
  • Immersion: Gaining such a depth of knowledge about Sano’s solutions as to be able to present related opportunities meaningfully to external collaborators, and give useful feedback to the research and engineering teams.
  • Achievement: Monitor business development Key Performance Indicators.
  • Currency: Driving forward Sano’s awareness of international developments in products, approvals, market penetration, novelty.
  • Relationships: Maintain Sano’s Partner Relationship Management resources, curating all acquired and potential contacts/leads, in cooperation with other Sano Support & Development specialists.
  • Entrepreneurship: Helping shape Sano internal development-related entrepreneurial culture, assisting in preparation of Sano teams which seek private funding to maximise potential of successful spin-off establishment.
  • Support-Garnering: Acquisition of detailed, targeted and quantified Letters of Support from authorities, hospitals and industry, to support Sano in fundraising and asset-building.
  • Territories: Sano is an international organisation and works on an international arena, therefore occasional travel to other countries will be expected (no more than 10% of work time).

As our successful candidate you should have:

  • At least 7 years of experience working for research-focused or international organisations, including min. 3 years of professional experience in business development position for technological, research-focused organisations working in the medical domain;
  • Experience in representing a company or an institute as the first point of contact for external partners of various size (e.g. startups, large pharma, governmental agencies, universities, clinics)
  • Ability to present added value for potential contractual research customers in a convincing way
  • Good organisational skills to handle multiple dialogues on various stages of development with different stakeholders
  • Higher education – economy, biotechnology, bioinformatics, computer science or relevant preferred;
  • Fluent English in writing and speech.

We offer a contract for employment with a salary between 9 000 – 15 000 PLN gross (depending on the seniority)  and a wide range of benefits including private medical care and sports card, flexible working hours (hybrid mode is possible, i.e. partly home office on your request).
